-
ALWAYS have the police respond to the accident scene
when all parties are still there. Late reported accidents are difficult to investigate.
-
Make sure that you get complete identification from the other
driver(s), including
their driver’s license, vehicle registration and insurance card. Ask everyone individually, if
they are injured and write down exactly what they tell you.
-
When you get home, immediately take pictures of the damage to your vehicle and keep them along with the
other information that you have obtained at the accident scene.
-
Inform your insurance company as soon as possible.
If you are in a minor accident and someone gives you the name of a
doctor or lawyer who can "make you money" or if a body shop offers to inflate
your damage estimate to include your deductible, don’t just walk away and forget
it. Call the Insurance Fraud Prevention Bureau at the Insurance Department at
1-800-632-5154.
